The SmartWatch: Apple iWatch

There has been much speculation over Apple's intention to enter the smart watch market and a further, strong indication that the company is at the very least considering the prospect has emerged. Apple has filed an application for trademark of the name "iWatch" in Japan. Engadget Japan noticed that several companies have filed applications for the same name, but one stood out more than the others. The most important, filed on 3 June, was from Apple Inc, with the address details mentioning
Infinity Loop, Cupertino. There are no further revelations in the filing. It has previously been reported that Apple has assigned a team of 100 people to work on the iWatch, and that it will perform many of the functions handled by the iPhone and iPad. Additionally, Apple has been rumoured to be testing 1.5-inch screens with manufacturer Foxconn, although as the latter has since announced its own smart watch prototype device, perhaps that would explain this particular nugget of speculation. Finally, an iWatch patent filed in the US gave the impression that the device could feature a flexible display, which prompted a round of excellent concept renders to appear. Whatever the truth behind the iWatch, Pocket-lint will follow this story closely.
